What can I do to improve the accuracy of my motion detector?

Question

I have a passive infrared (PIR) motion detector installed in our backyard to detect movement at night. However, I notice that the detector occasionally fails to trigger when someone walks by, and other times it activates for no reason, possibly due to small animals or passing cars.

Try adjusting the sensitivity dial on your detector. Gradually decrease the sensitivity to minimize false triggers from small animals or distant objects, but make sure it still detects human movement.
